Musketeers pick up first commit in 2013
The top priority in the class of 2013 for Xavier coach Chris Mack has been to find an aggressive slashing wing that can replace what the team lost with the departure of Dez Wells.
On Tuesday the Musketeers took the first step towards replacing Wells by landing prep school forward Kamall Richards.
A 6-foot-6 small forward who graduated last year in 2012 from Saint Benedict's Prep in Newark (N.J.), Richards is spending a year of post-grad school at the prestigious South Kent School in Connecticut.
After taking official visits to all three of his finalists in Xavier, Seton Hall, and St. Joe's, Richards was most impressed by the atmosphere at Xavier, which he visited for Musketeer Madness, and eventually decided to make his commitment to the Musketeers.
Richards marks the first commitment for newly appointed assistant coach Ashley Howard, who came to Xavier with strong ties to the fertile recruiting grounds of the Northeast, which Richards hails from.
The forward broke out this spring and summer playing on the AAU circuit with one of Under Armour's premiere teams, We-R-1. In the last year scouts have been impressed with the improvement that Richards has made as he has transformed himself from an athletic combo forward who was used to give energy and create mismatches, to a true small forward capable of attacking the basket.
Richards strength at Xavier could be his ability to guard multiple positions with his strength and athleticism. Using his high motor and versatility Richards should be able to effectively defend guards, wings and forwards with his size at 6-foot-6.
Offensively, Richards best attribute is his ability to get to the basket, but his all-around offensive game is steadily improving.
While he isn't much of a shooter yet, Richards has a solid handle and is tough to keep out of the lane with his bursts of speed and strong frame.
As of now, Richards will be the only prospect signing with the Musketeers in the fall signing period, which begins next week, but the Xavier staff is hot on the trail pursuing commitments from a couple of other key guards and wings.
