Newkirk Considering Four Schools
Josh Newkirk is the top junior basketball prospect at Word of God in Raleigh (N.C.) and that's a high honor considering the talent the school has sent to the college ranks recently. He won't be making his decision for a while but he has narrowed his list to four schools.
MusketeerScoop.com caught up with Newkirk, the nation's No. 10 point guard, and he spoke at length about the recruiting process.
The four-star prospect will be spending the next couple of months playing AAU ball for D-One Sports.
"I'm playing in Augusta right now and then we'll probably be going to the Pitt Jam Fest later," Newkirk said. "That's all I know of right now.
"I haven't planned any visits lately but recently I went to Georgia Tech. I plan on going to some others like Xavier and Tennessee."
The Yellow Jackets made a strong case when Newkirk was in Atlanta.
"That was real good. They just talked to me and showed me the campus. They told me how they saw me fitting in. Basically they told me I'd come in and play because (Mfon) Udofia wouldn't be there by the time I got there," he said.
Why does he want to check out the Musketeers and Volunteers?
"Xavier, just because of the way they let their guards go. They give them a bunch of freedom," Newkirk said.
"Tennessee is the same way. They let them run a lot."
Travis Steele has been recruiting Newkirk for the Musketeers and he has made a good impression.
"He's a real good guy," Newkirk said. "We talk a lot and we're getting a better relationship as time goes on."
Newkirk said he has "pretty much" narrowed his list to NC State, Georgia Tech, Xavier and Tennessee. He said he will probably wait until after his senior season before he makes his decision, so it could be another year.
This past season Newkirk averaged 19 points and seven assists per contest.
