NYCHoops: Top Ten 2007 (NYC)
NYC Hoops (powered by Rivals.com) ranks the top 10 varsity basketball teams in the New York City area based on wins & loses (league & non-league games) taking into account, how many games were played and competitive level of teams played.
Relative weight, in order, is given to wins or losses against nationally ranked out of state teams, other teams in The NYC Hoops Top 10 and against the 5 "bubbling under" teams. Less weight is given to teams that are not ranked.
#1. Rice (New York, NY) 10 - 0
The undefeated Rice Raiders won both the Iolani Classic in Hawaii, where they beat #8 Mt. Vernon, as well as the Bay Ball Classic in Delaware. Chris Fouch and Kemba Walker have played impressively.
#2. St. Raymond's (Bronx, NY) 11 - 0
The Ravens continue handling all opposition with poise and determination. They're big wins include defeating #6 Christ the King as well as Paterson Catholic of New Jersey. They've also won the Gatorade International Tournament in Puerto Rico and are still undefeated. Kevin Parrom and Darryl Bryant have stepped up.
#3. Holy Cross (Flushing, NY) 8 - 1
The Knights defeated #7 Boys & Girls early and was undefeated until going into the City of Palms Tournament in Florida. In that tournament they defeated, nationally ranked, Woodland Hills Taft but suffered their first loss against Chester (PA). They also won the STOP-DWI Tournament in Binghamton, NY. Outstanding playing has come from Sylven Landesberg and Blaise Ffrench.
#4. Abraham Lincoln (Brooklyn, NY) 8 - 2
The Railsplitters came out defeating everyone in sight including their nemesis #7 Boys & Girls. In the Bojangles Tournament in NC, however, Lincoln loss their first game to a very physical Moeller team from Ohio and then lost again the next day to South Atlanta. Lance Stephenson and Vincent Council have played well.
#5. Bishop Loughlin (Brooklyn, NY) 6 - 2
The Lions have played well defeating St. Dominic of Long Island and Towson Catholic (MD) and made it to the quarterfinals of both the Gonzaga Tournament in D.C. and the Tampa Bay Classic in Florida before losing. Their two losses came against Gonzaga and to Olympia. James Johnson and Doron Lamb.
#6. Christ the King (Middle Village, NY) 6 - 2
The Royals have struggled to stay in the mix. They've beaten teams who they're supposed to beat but have loss games some key games. They've lost against #2 St. Ray's and against Caravel Academy in the Beach Ball Classic in SC. They also squeaked by the then #10 Xaverian by one point. They placed 5th in the Beach Ball Classic in SC. Ryan Pearson and Sean Johnson have been key players.
#7. Boys & Girls (Brooklyn, NY) 9 - 3
The Kangaroos have been impressive but loss key games against #3 Holy Cross, #4 Lincoln in double OT and then to Wheeler (GA) in the Beach Ball Classic which they went 3 - 1 in. Clayton Sterling and Brandon Romain have played well.
#8. Mount Vernon (Mt. Vernon, NY) 5 - 2
The Knights dominated the local competition but loss 2 games in the Iolani Tournament in Hawaii. One of their losses came against #1 Rice where they lost by over 20 points.
Sherrod Wright and Kevin Jones have played well.
#9. Archbishop Molloy (Briarwood, NY) 7 - 2
New to the rankings, taking out #10 Xaverian and putting them back on the bubble, The Molloy Stanners have been gaining steam. They defeated #8 ranked in Long Island, Kellenberg and #2 Long Island Lutheran. They did however lose 2 key games in Florida but bounced back defeating Bloomfield Tech of NJ. Russ Smith has been stellar for Molloy.
#10. John F. Kennedy (Bronx, NY) 11 - 1
The Knights went undefeated for 11 games and must be credited for shear volume of wins. Their most significant win was over the then ranked Wings Academy but hasn't t really played anyone significant except when they recently participated in the Mode Risher Tournament in Florida where they suffered their first loss, going 2 - 1. Kadeem Nicholas and Jeffrey Arzu have been their key players.
